There was good news for the north Mayo area with the announcement yesterday of an allocation of €250,000 seed money to begin construction on a 14 km greenway from Ballina to Killala along the River Moy. The greenway will incorporate an off road cycle track and walk and will incorporate a number of monasteries along the river. It is envisioned that this 14km stretch will be the first phase of a multi-phase greenway in the larger north Mayo area.

Mayo Fine Gael Deputy Michelle Mulherin, has welcomed this week’s announcement by Minister for Agriculture and the Marine Simon Coveney of a €4 billion Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has this week said that works on the Ballina Mains Rehabilitation Scheme will be funded and prioritised this year.

Mayo County Council was this week granted €3.4 million from the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government under the 2014 Rural Water Programme. The bulk of the funding relates to group water schemes for design, build, operate (DBO) projects, as well as connections to public mains and takeover projects.

Deputy Michelle Mulherin confirmed she has secured a meeting with Minister of State Alex White for Mayo GPs who have expressed concerns in relation to the terms of proposed contract to realise the Government's plan for the provision of a free GP service to all children aged under six years in the country.

Funding of €700,000 has been announced to bring four Mayo community nursing units in line with HIQA standards.
